Caring for your Tattoo

At Safe Voyage Tattoo, we’re committed to giving you not only a high-quality tattoo but also a smooth and comfortable experience from start to finish. Here’s what you need to know before, during, and after your tattoo appointment:

Before Your Tattoo

1. Rest Up

Get a good night’s sleep. Being well-rested helps your body handle pain and sit longer if needed.

2. Eat Something

Have a solid meal 1–2 hours before your appointment. Low blood sugar can lead to dizziness or fainting.

3. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before your session. Hydrated skin is healthier and easier to tattoo.

4. Avoid Alcohol & Blood Thinners

No alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment. It thins the blood and can increase bleeding.

5. Dress Comfortably

Wear loose-fitting clothes that give your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Bring a hoodie or layers—it can get chilly in the chair.

6. Stay Clean

Shower beforehand and come in with clean skin (no lotions or oils). We’ll prep the area, but it helps to arrive fresh.

7. Bring Entertainment

Books, headphones, or your favorite playlist can help pass the time and keep you relaxed.

During Your Tattoo

1. Communicate

Feel free to ask questions or let us know if you need a break. We’re here to make sure you feel safe and supported.

2. Breathe & Relax

Try to stay calm and breathe evenly. Tensing up can make things more uncomfortable than they need to be.

3. Trust the Process

You’ve chosen a professional for a reason—relax and let the artist do their thing.

Tattoo Aftercare

Proper care ensures your tattoo heals well and stays looking fresh. Here’s a general guide (your artist may give custom instructions based on your piece):

1. Leave the Bandage On

Keep your bandage on for the time your artist recommends (usually 2–6 hours). Then wash your hands and gently clean the area with fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.

2. Pat Dry

Use a clean paper towel to pat the tattoo dry—no rubbing.

3. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

Use only what your artist recommends (usually a fragrance-free ointment or lotion). Apply a thin layer, just enough to keep it lightly moisturized.

4. Avoid Soaking

No baths, swimming, or hot tubs until it’s fully healed (about 2–4 weeks). Showers are fine—just avoid direct water pressure on the tattoo.

5. Don’t Scratch or Pick

It’s normal for the tattoo to flake or peel—resist the urge to pick at it.

6. Wear Loose Clothing

Tight clothes can rub and irritate the tattooed area. Stick with breathable, soft fabrics.

7. Protect It From the Sun

After it’s fully healed, use sunscreen to keep your tattoo vibrant for years to come.

If you ever have questions about your tattoo or healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
